grade r

At Allandale Primary School, our Grade R class provides the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Guided by experienced and passionate educators, our youngest learners are encouraged to explore, discover and grow in a nurturing and stimulating environment.

Through purposeful play and hands-on activities, children develop essential early literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills. The Grade R curriculum also places a strong emphasis on social and emotional development, helping learners build confidence, independence and positive relationships with others.

Learners who have completed Grade R at Allandale benefit from a smooth and familiar transition into Grade 1, as they continue to grow within the same nurturing community.

foundation phase

The Foundation Phase encompasses Grades 1 to 3, forming the cornerstone of each learner’s academic journey. This crucial stage focuses on building strong foundational skills in Literacy, Numeracy and Life Skills, as outlined in the CAPS curriculum. Our goal is to nurture confident, curious and capable learners who are ready to progress successfully into the Intermediate Phase.

Grade 1 marks the beginning of formal schooling. Learners are welcomed into a warm, structured, and stimulating environment where they are introduced to the CAPS curriculum through interactive and engaging lessons.

In Grade 2, learners build upon the foundational skills acquired in Grade 1, gaining greater confidence and independence as thinkers and problem-solvers.

Grade 3 serves as a pivotal year in the Foundation Phase, where learners consolidate their knowledge and prepare for the transition to the Intermediate Phase.

Across all three grades, the Foundation Phase at Allandale Primary School aims to create a nurturing and inspiring learning environment where every child is supported to reach their full potential-academically, socially and emotionally.

intermediate phase

The Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6) marks an exciting transition in each learner’s educational journey. Learners begin to explore a broader range of subjects within the CAPS curriculum, including Languages, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology, Social Sciences and Creative Arts, among others. This expansion encourages curiosity, independence and responsibility for their own learning.

With more structured academic expectations, learners are guided to develop essential skills such as critical thinking, organization, effective communication and study techniques.

Our caring and experienced teachers play a vital role in supporting learners through this stage, helping them adapt to increased workloads while maintaining enthusiasm and confidence in their abilities.

In this phase, learners are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, which promote teamwork, leadership and personal growth beyond the classroom. Emphasis is placed on character development, respect and accountability, ensuring that learners mature both socially and emotionally.

By the end of Grade 6, learners are well-prepared to embrace the opportunities and challenges of Grade 7 and the Senior Phase. They leave the Intermediate Phase as confident, capable, and responsible individuals, ready to continue their academic journey with curiosity and determination.

Senior Phase

Grade 7 is a pivotal year at Allandale Primary School – a time of academic growth, personal development and leadership. As the senior learners of the school, Grade 7 students are guided to develop the confidence, maturity and responsibility needed to transition successfully into high school.

The CAPS curriculum at this stage is enriched with the introduction of new and dynamic subjects, including Coding and Robotics and Economic and Management Sciences (EMS)

Beyond academics, Grade 7 learners are encouraged to take on leadership and mentorship roles within the school. Opportunities such as serving as prefects, class leaders and academic mentors allow them to model positive behaviour, demonstrate responsibility and support younger learners. These experiences cultivate teamwork, empathy and a strong sense of community.

Grade 7 also focuses on preparing learners for the emotional and social transition to high school. Through guidance, mentorship and support, learners build resilience, self-discipline and confidence, ensuring they leave Allandale Primary School ready to face new challenges and embrace future opportunities.
